MP3 has caught on, so much so that a future replacement technology has not been identified yet. “MP3 is going to be around for awhile -- at least 10 years,” says iSuppli analyst Shyam Nagrani. It will overtake the CD format, too, he believes.
At this point in time I can not see why you would want to replace mp3, that is unless you work for the RIAA. There is no DRM with MP3 that's why it is so popular with the people, If MP3 goes away it will only be for one of two reasons something better comes along or the RIAA some how forces it to go away.

Why would you want to replace MP3? Well, there are much higher-quality formats out there, many of which are open source. Just from the perspective of sound quality, MP3 is a rather "lame" format (pun intended, of course!). Alternatives such as OGG or MPC don't have DRM, and if I understand correctly, never will because of the source code license. WMA just plain sucks, both in terms of sound quality and DRM. *shudder*
I know what your saying about higher quality formats but every time I have installed a OGC or MPC codecs they have come with a shit load of adware.
That is going to put a lot of people off, I know now If i see a movie or any thing in OGG I dont bother downloading it as I know it's going to be such a pain in the ass to get it to play.
While there are better formats they dotn have the same mind share as mp3, It's going to take a lot to take that away.
